CHIEF CHARLES WEASEL HEAD
Chief Charles Weasel Head Jr. was born on the Blood reserve
in 1949, and is one of eight siblings and grandchildren of noted spiritual leader
Pat Weasel Head. He received his early education at the St. Mary’s Indian
Residential School and graduated in 1968 from the St. Mary’s Boy’s
High School in Calgary. Upon completing his High School, Charles pursued a career
in Health.
He attended the University of Saskatchewan studying Healthcare Administration.
His interests in health care have made him acutely aware of the health concerns
of his community. His administrative experience in health services matured serving
as the Director of Napi Lodge, an alcohol Treatment Centre in the early 1980’s,
and Poundmaker’s Lodge near St. Albert, Alberta, and also as the Director
of the Blood Indian Hospital under Health Canada in the early 1990’s.
In 1996, Charles moved to the high profile post as Chief Executive Officer for
the Blood Tribe Department of Health--a position he held until his election
as Chief of the Blood Tribe. In his tenure as the CEO, Charles assisted in the
1988 transition from the Blood Indian Hospital to the Kainai Continuing Care
Centre. The Kainai Continuing Care Centre is a tribally-run extended care centre
and is one of only two in Canada. He was also involved in the success of numerous
health initiatives dedicated to improving the health care of the Blood people.
Today, Charles continues his participation as an active member of numerous Boards
and Committees.
As the Chief of Canada’s largest Indian reserve, Charles constantly strives
for a better community. Some of his priorities include: long term planning initiatives
to address local economic, social and environmental issues; taking a firm stand
on tribal resources (both renewable and non-renewable); challenging local, regional
and federal governments in protecting the Blood Tribe’s Treaty rights;
exploring new and innovative partnership approaches; and addressing more local
issues including: housing, poverty, violence in the community, and other social,
economic and health issues.
Charles has a keen interest in family. Together with wife Rhonda, they raised
seven children and enjoy being involved in family activities. Another interest
Charles has had throughout his life is sports. During his years at the Residential
School, he became a noted athlete and a star player for the St. Mary’s
Warriors. He helped the team win a number of Provincial awards. Charles was
also part of an all-star team which represented Alberta on a National level.
His involvement in sports was a perfect fit as he became a member of the Indigenous
Sports Council. Presently, Charles continues to be involved in Rodeo and has
a great love for horses. He owns and manages a string of racehorses and continues
to be involved in numerous sporting activities.
