Subject:            Kainai Community Corrections Society

I am writing to the community to encourage you to become involved in the campaign to have the Alberta Government restore funding to the Kainai Community Corrections Society.

I have been involved with the Society since its inception in 1989.  Since then I have worked diligently to help make the Society and the Kainai Correctional Centre a shining example of a First Nation model for self-administration in the field of justice.  The Kainai Community Corrections Society is a valuable resource within the community and it delivers programs and services that work to the betterment of the male Aboriginal offender.

Over the years the Kainai Community Correctional Centre has generated an enormous amount of good will within the community.  In addition, staff have worked diligently and professionally to provide a valuable service within the provincial correctional system.

The Kainai Community Corrections Society was advised on Feb. 9, 2010 in a letter that the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security Department was cutting the funding.  Without this funding, the Kainai Community Correctional Centre will be closed and other worthwhile programs in the area of rehabilitation and crime prevention will cease to be delivered.

The reason the Alberta Government is cutting funding is because they say the Correctional Centre is being underutilized, despite the over representation of Aboriginal offenders in the system.

Permanent and part-time jobs for community members will be lost.  These number 29 positions.

I ask that you become involved by sending an email to the politicians listed when you go to our website,  http://www.kccs.ca/ or write to them as their addresses are listed.

We need to show the Alberta Government the community values the Kainai Community Corrections Society.
